"The small classes, the awareness, and close attention given by teachers and administrators. Structure of teaching, not just cattle calling the children. Most of all dealing with the inner child as well as academics [sic]."

Student Life and Enrichment

Our small school community allows for students to be "known" by many adults who hold consistent expectations for students to be their best, in and out of the classrooms. The teachers not only work with students in their enrichment classes, but they are a constant presence during recess and school-wide transitions. Students get a well-rounded education through a variety of enrichment classes:
Healthy Nutrition and Wellness
We know that eating healthy and daily physical activity increases student learning, boosts energy, improves school attendance, and induces more positive behavior.

Salad Bar: In 2005, Principal Nguyen advocated to Nutritional Services to bring a Salad Bar to OUSD lunches. So when Nutritional Services received a grant to do just that, EnCompass Academy was selected as one of the first schools in the district to pilot having this healthy lunch option for students. Now schools all over our district have seasonal fruits and vegetables as entree alternatives or supplements. Thank you Nutritional Services for your leadership and partnership!

Harvest of the Month: OUSD's partnership with Alameda County Nutrition Services brings EnCompass students nutrition education while inspiring students to eat more fruits and vegetables through the Harvest of the Month Program. Each month a featured fruit or vegetable is served in OUSD school lunch rooms. Our students get a fresh fruit or vegetable three times a week to develop healthy snacking habits.

Cooking Cart: Thanks to Alameda County's Nutrition Services, EnCompass has a full cooking cart for mobile cooking demonstrations and instruction. It has a blender and is fully equipped with two burners, working space to cut and chop, a cabinet for appliances, and an overhead mirror to help students see the cooking action.

Counseling: Students who are referred receive weekly one on one sessions with Wright Counseling Institute Interns. Group therapy, friendship circles, and family therapy are also offered.

EnCompass After School Scholars: We serve over 100 students in the after school program. In addition to academic enrichment, EnCAS instructors teach enrichment through Media Literacy, Drama, Drumming, Singing, Steppin’ Into Success Drill Team, and organized sports and recreation.
